Description
Zaanse Schans is a historic open-air ensemble on the Zaan River near Zaandam, offering a vivid glimpse into the Netherlands’ industrial and craft heritage of the 18th and 19th centuries. The site took shape from the 1960s onward, when historic buildings from across the surrounding Zaanstreek were relocated here. Its traditional green wooden houses, warehouses, and especially its preserved windmills form the heart of the village, with several mills still operating to saw wood, press oil, or process mustard. Workshops, a cheese farm, a traditional clog maker, and small museums devoted to regional history and horology add to the experience. One of the Netherlands’ best-known historic attractions, Zaanse Schans is also easily accessible from Amsterdam.
