Description
Giethoorn is a picturesque water village in the Dutch province of Overijssel, known for its narrow canals, more than 170 wooden bridges, and traditional thatched-roof farmhouses. Its historic center developed in a landscape shaped over centuries by peat extraction, drainage, and agriculture. Waterways and footpaths continue to define the village, while flat-bottomed boats offer a distinctive way to explore its houses, gardens, and bridges. Located near Weerribben-Wieden National Park, Giethoorn combines historic village character with a unique wetland landscape. Its scenic canals have earned it the nickname “Venice of the Netherlands”.
