Description
Kinderdijk is one of the Netherlands’ most remarkable historic windmill landscapes and an outstanding example of Dutch water management. Its 19 surviving windmills form part of a historic system of polders, dikes, waterways, sluices, and pumping stations developed over centuries to drain the low-lying Alblasserwaard. Particularly impressive are the rows of windmills at Nederwaard and Overwaard, most of which were built between 1738 and 1740. Since 1997, Kinderdijk has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking and waterways lead through the characteristic polder landscape, illustrating how the Dutch have shaped and protected their land from water for centuries.
