Ypres

Ypres combines a carefully reconstructed historic centre with one of Europe's most important landscapes of First World War remembrance. The Gothic Cloth Hall and belfry dominate the Grote Markt, while the In Flanders Fields Museum uses personal testimony and objects to explain the war's impact on soldiers and civilians.

At the Menin Gate, the Last Post ceremony maintains a continuing ritual of remembrance. Beyond the town, cemeteries, memorials, preserved trenches and former front lines extend across the surrounding countryside; several sites form part of UNESCO's transnational funerary and memorial heritage. Approach the landscape with time and respect rather than trying to collect every site. Walking and cycling work for nearby locations, but a car or guided tour helps connect the wider salient. One or two days are appropriate. Verify ceremony arrangements, museum times and access to smaller sites, especially during commemorations or restoration work.
