Description
Yerevan (Երևան) was founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 before Christ, which makes it older than Rome, but the city you walk through was drawn from scratch in the nineteen twenties by Alexander Tamanian, who laid a ring boulevard and a radial grid and specified that everything be faced in the local volcanic tuff. That stone is pink, so the whole centre changes colour through the day. On a clear morning Mount Ararat stands enormous on the southern skyline, forty kilometres away and across a closed border in Turkey, which is most of what you need to know about Armenia.
