Description
Goris (Գորիս) sits in a bowl in southern Armenia where wind and water have cut the soft tuff into ranks of standing pyramids, many of them hollowed into rooms and byres that the town used before it moved down to the valley floor. The nineteenth century grid of stone houses below is unusual in the country for having been planned. Ten kilometres east the abandoned cave village of Old Khndzoresk fills both walls of a ravine, joined since 2012 by a swinging footbridge a hundred and sixty metres long and sixty three metres above the floor.
