Dilijan
Armenia · Tavush · 1250 m
Description
Dilijan (Դիլիջան) sits in dense beech and oak forest in the Tavush hills and is called the “Armenian Switzerland” often enough that the tourist board has given up resisting it. It was a Soviet writers' and composers' retreat, Sharambeyan Street has been restored as a lane of wooden-balconied craft workshops, and since 2014 the international UWC school has brought a young foreign population to a town of fifteen thousand. Around it Dilijan National Park protects the forest, with the small Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries hidden in it and Parz Lake in a clearing.
