Tsaghkadzor, Armenia

Tsaghkadzor

Armenia · Kotayk · 1840 m

Description

Tsaghkadzor (Ծաղկաձոր) is the ski resort of Armenia, on the slopes of Mount Teghenis an hour from Yerevan, and it was built as the high altitude training centre where the Soviet Union prepared its athletes for the Mexico City Olympics. A five stage gondola climbs to two thousand eight hundred metres and the season runs from December into March, short by Alpine standards but reliable and very cheap. The eleventh century Kecharis monastery stands in the middle of the town among the hotels, which is the sort of juxtaposition Armenia does without comment.
