Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine in southern Poland is one of Europe’s most remarkable historic salt mines and an extraordinary testament to centuries of mining history. Salt was extracted here from the 13th century until industrial production ended in 1996. Over generations, miners transformed the underground tunnels and chambers into a unique world of chapels, sculptures, reliefs, and intricate salt carvings. Particularly impressive is the Chapel of St. Kinga, located 101 meters underground, with its salt-carved artworks and chandeliers. Underground lakes and historic chambers offer glimpses into the mining traditions of past centuries. Wieliczka has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 and is one of southern Poland’s best-known attractions.
