Wadi Rum, Jordan

Wadi Rum

Jordan · Aqaba · 1000 m

Description

Wadi Rum (وادي رم) is a desert of red sand and towering sandstone and granite mountains in Jordan's far south, listed by UNESCO for both its landscape and its rock art. Water-carved gorges, natural rock bridges and inscriptions left over twelve thousand years cut through jebels that rise as sheer walls straight out of the valley floor. The area is the home of the Zalabia Bedouin, who run the camps, guides and four-wheel-drive tours and hold the tourism concession inside the protected area. T. E. Lawrence crossed and wrote about this desert during the Arab Revolt, and its scale has since made it a standing double for other planets in film. Nights in the open camps are the real attraction, with almost no light pollution and a sky that is genuinely dark. Summer days climb past forty degrees and winter nights fall below freezing in unheated tents.
