Description
Amman (عمّان) is Jordan's capital and the arrival point for almost every visitor to the country. The city spreads across a ring of pale limestone hills, and its oldest layer sits on the highest of them. There the Citadel holds the standing columns of a Roman Temple of Hercules beside the domed audience hall of an Umayyad palace. Directly below, the Roman Theatre still cuts its steep bowl of seating into the hillside and holds six thousand people. Downtown Amman, known as “al-Balad”, is a dense grid of gold souks, spice stalls and hummus houses that have stayed in the same families for generations. Around Rainbow Street and Jabal Amman the city turns quieter and more contemporary, with galleries, rooftop cafes and stairways linking one hill to the next.
