Description
Someone spent fifteen hundred years cutting pictures into the granite around Tanum, and about six hundred panels of them survive within a few kilometres. The figures are ships, ploughs, hunters, weapons and couples, from the bronze age when this rock was the shoreline and the sea reached fifteen metres higher. They are painted red today so visitors can see them, which is not how they looked but is how they get read. The museum at Vitlycke has a reconstructed bronze age farm and a workshop where the carving technique is demonstrated. UNESCO listed the area in 1994 for the density and the range of the images.
