Description
Karlskrona is a historic naval city on Sweden's southeastern Baltic coast, founded in 1680 by King Karl XI as the new base for the Swedish fleet. Its UNESCO-listed old town preserves a rare, largely intact example of a 17th-century planned naval city, with a Baroque grid of streets centered on Stortorget square and the twin Baroque churches Fredrikskyrkan and Trefaldighetskyrkan. The Marine Museum and the sea fortresses of Kungsholm Fort and Drottningskär guard the surrounding archipelago, which spreads across some 30 islands. Karlskrona combines naval heritage, elegant stone architecture, and an extensive skerry landscape, making it one of southern Sweden's most distinctive historic destinations.
