Description
Ystad kept about three hundred half timbered houses because it stopped mattering economically in the eighteenth century and nobody had the money to knock them down. The night watchman still sounds a horn from the church tower every quarter hour through the night, a habit unbroken since the seventeenth century. Henning Mankell set his detective here and the town has quietly monetised it without letting it take over. East along the coast the land rises to Ales stenar, a stone ship of fifty nine boulders set on a cliff above the sea, whose purpose nobody has established.
