Description
Kalmar is a historic port city on Sweden's southeastern coast and the traditional gateway to the island of Öland. The city is dominated by Kalmar Castle (Kalmar Slott), a moated Renaissance stronghold where the Kalmar Union uniting Sweden, Denmark, and Norway was signed in 1397. Its walkable old town, Kvarnholmen, is laid out in a Baroque grid around Kalmar Cathedral and Stortorget square. The Öland Bridge, one of Europe's longest, connects the city directly to Öland's beaches and windmills.
