Description
Shahrisabz is where Timur was born and where he built the palace meant to outdo everything else, the Ak Saray, of which two colossal fragments of the entrance arch survive on either side of a gap. They stand about forty metres and the span between them shows how wide the original opening was. He also prepared a crypt for himself here and was buried in Samarkand instead, so the tomb sits empty under the Dorus Siyodat. UNESCO put the town on its list and later flagged the modern clearance of the old quarters around the monuments as a threat to what it had listed.
