Description
Fergana is the youngest city in the valley it names, laid out by Russian engineers in 1876 as a garrison town called New Margelan and given a fan of boulevards radiating from a parade ground. It has almost no old architecture for that reason and is instead the place with the hotels, the airport and the restaurants, from which the rest of the valley is reached in a day. The park is named for the ninth century astronomer al-Farghani, who was born in this region. The valley is drier and colder in winter than Tashkent.
