Description
Saut-d'Eau is a waterfall of about thirty metres dropping in stages through fig trees into a pool below the village of Ville-Bonheur. A vision of the Virgin of Mount Carmel on a palm tree here in the middle of the nineteenth century made it a place of pilgrimage, and Catholic devotion and vodou practice have run side by side at it ever since. Every year from the fourteenth to the sixteenth of July thousands come to bathe under the falls, tie ribbons in the branches and ask a favour of the Virgin or of Erzulie Dantor. Mass is said the same days.
