Description
Kenscoff sits at fifteen hundred metres in the mountains directly above the capital, and the road up climbs through pine forest into air cool enough for a jumper. Market gardens on the terraces supply Port-au-Prince with leeks, carrots and strawberries, and the Friday market brings them down in baskets. Wynne Farm is a small ecological reserve laid out in the 1950s to teach soil conservation on a hillside that had lost its trees. Furcy further up is a scatter of houses in cloud. On a clear morning the whole bay lies below. Hydrangeas and bougainvillea grow along the garden walls at this altitude.
