Description
Les Cayes is the port and market town of the southern peninsula and the fourth city of Haiti, laid out on a flat shore with a shallow harbour and a scatter of low cays offshore. Boats leave for Île-à-Vache from the quay several times a day. Gelée, a few kilometres east, is a long grey beach that fills for the patron festival on the fifteenth of August. Antoine-Simon airport north of the town took its first international flight in 2025 after the runway was lengthened. The Boulevard des Quatre Chemins and the cathedral square hold what survived the hurricanes. The ornithologist John James Audubon was born here in 1785.
