San Juan del Sur is Nicaragua's best-known beach and surfing destination on the Pacific coast and the country's hub for surfing and backpacker culture. The lively coastal town is set around a picturesque horseshoe-shaped bay and is known for its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront bars, and the renowned surf beaches nearby, including Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa. Overlooking the bay is the monumental Christ of the Mercy (Cristo de la Misericordia) statue, one of the town's most recognizable landmarks.
