Ometepe (Isla de Ometepe) is a volcanic island in Lake Nicaragua and ranks among Nicaragua’s most impressive natural and cultural landscapes. Formed by the twin volcanoes Concepción and Maderas, which are connected by a narrow isthmus, the island is renowned for its distinctive hourglass shape and remarkable biodiversity. Ometepe is known for its pre-Columbian petroglyphs and archaeological sites, traditional villages, fertile plantations, and the natural spring Ojo de Agua. Hiking the volcanoes, kayaking through the mangroves of the Río Istián, and observing the island’s abundant wildlife are among the most popular activities. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Ometepe combines spectacular scenery, a rich cultural heritage, and the relaxed pace of rural island life.
