Description
The Río San Juan is the only outlet of Lake Nicaragua and one of Central America's most remarkable river landscapes. On its journey to the Caribbean, it winds through dense tropical rainforest, including the biodiverse Indio-Maíz Biosphere Reserve, and forms much of the natural border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Its best-known attractions include the historic fortress of El Castillo, built to protect the colonial trade route, and the Solentiname Islands, renowned for their school of naïve painting, abundant birdlife, and tranquil natural setting. Combining spectacular scenery, colonial history, and cultural heritage, the Río San Juan is one of Nicaragua's most rewarding travel destinations.
