Description

Pingyao (平遥) is one of China's best-preserved historic cities and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Located in Shanxi Province, the former commercial and financial center retains its remarkably intact Ming- and Qing-era urban layout, complete with imposing city walls, traditional courtyard residences, temples, and historic government buildings. Pingyao is renowned as the birthplace of modern Chinese banking, with the founding of the Rishengchang Draft Bank helping transform the city into one of China's leading financial hubs during the 19th century. Today, its car-free Old Town, historic Ming and Qing Street, and wealth of museums and cultural landmarks offer visitors an authentic glimpse into imperial China.
