Description

Suzhou (苏州) is one of China's most historic cities, renowned for its classical gardens, picturesque canals, and more than 2,500 years of cultural heritage. Long regarded as the cradle of Chinese garden design, it is often called the “Venice of the East” for its dense network of waterways. More than 50 historic gardens survive today, nine of which are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Historic canal districts, elegant stone bridges, and nearby ancient water towns such as Tongli preserve the distinctive character of the Jiangnan region. Blending refined garden art, historic architecture, and modern urban life, Suzhou ranks among eastern China's most rewarding destinations and is easily reached from Shanghai in around half an hour by high-speed rail.
