Öland
Sweden · 5 m
Description
Öland is a long, narrow island off Sweden’s southeastern coast, connected to the mainland by the roughly 6-kilometer Öland Bridge. The island combines stark limestone landscapes, traditional villages, medieval churches, and distinctive wooden windmills. In the south, the vast Stora Alvaret dominates the landscape, a species-rich limestone plain whose unique cultural landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Attractions such as Solliden Palace, the summer residence of the Swedish royal family, and the reconstructed Eketorp fortress reflect Öland’s rich history. Long sandy beaches, shallow bays, and a relatively sunny climate make the island a popular destination for nature, culture, and summer holidays.
