Description
Okinawa (沖縄) is Japan’s subtropical island region in the south of the country, known for its turquoise waters, coral reefs, and distinctive Ryukyu culture. The islands combine tropical beaches and excellent diving and snorkeling with the cultural heritage of the once-independent Ryukyu Kingdom. Naha, the prefectural capital, is the cultural and urban center, home to the historic Shuri Castle complex and lively Kokusai-dori, while coastal areas such as Onna and Motobu are known for beaches, resorts, and the famous Churaumi Aquarium. Farther southwest, islands such as Ishigaki and Miyako offer exceptionally clear waters, coral reefs, and expansive beaches. Okinawa’s warm climate, relaxed atmosphere, and unique island culture give the region a character distinctly different from mainland Japan.
