Description
Kamakura (鎌倉市) is a historic temple city on the coast south of Tokyo and one of Japan’s most important cultural destinations. The former seat of the country’s first samurai shogunate is known for the monumental Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in, Hase-dera with its gardens and views over the bay, the revered Tsurugaoka Hachimangū Shrine, and the bamboo grove of the Zen temple Hōkoku-ji. Kamakura combines Buddhist and Shinto heritage with forested hills, historic trails, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. The beaches of Yuigahama and Zaimokuza, charming side streets, cafés, and the historic Enoden railway make the city one of the most appealing destinations around Tokyo.
