Description
Marigot is the capital of the French half of an island shared with the Dutch since 1648, and the border across it is open with no post of any kind. The town sits between a saltwater lagoon and the sea, with a waterfront market under awnings on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a marina at Port La Royale. Fort Louis looks down from the hill behind, built in the 1780s and still carrying its cannon, with Anguilla visible across the channel. Pastry shops and bistros give the town a distinctly French rather than Caribbean tone. The island's airport on the Dutch side is ten minutes away.
