Description
Manihi is a remote atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago and one of the historic centers of French Polynesia’s pearl-farming industry. Its lagoon is dotted with pearl farms producing the famous black cultured pearls, and visitors can learn about the traditional cultivation process. Manihi is also known for its single passage to the open ocean, where divers encounter gray reef sharks, eagle rays, manta rays, and barracuda. Clear lagoon waters, coral reefs, and white-sand beaches define the landscape. Less developed and visited than better-known Rangiroa and Fakarava, Manihi offers a tranquil atmosphere shaped by Polynesian culture, marine life, and the enduring tradition of black-pearl cultivation.
