Description
Liepāja is a port on the western coast with a white sand beach running the length of the town and a reputation as the place Latvian rock came from. North of the centre lies Karosta, a naval base the Russian empire built in the eighteen nineties and the Soviets kept closed, now half abandoned, with a red brick Orthodox cathedral, a military prison open to visitors and coastal fortifications dynamited into the sea that lie broken on the sand. The contrast between the beach resort and the ruined base is the whole point of the place.
