Description
Kuldīga is a small town in western Latvia whose old centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its wooden architecture, a nearly complete survival of a seventeenth and eighteenth century Courland town built in timber rather than stone. The Venta cuts through it over a low ledge that makes the widest waterfall in Europe, two hundred and forty nine metres across and less than two metres high. Fish leap it in spring and autumn and were once caught in baskets held above the drop. A brick road bridge of 1874 crosses just below.
