Description
Cēsis is one of the oldest towns in Latvia and keeps a medieval street plan that Riga lost, with a castle of the Livonian Order standing half ruined at the top of it. Visitors are handed a lantern at the gate to find their way up the dark spiral of the western tower, which is the detail everyone remembers. A newer manor house adjoining it holds the museum. The town below is small, low and built around a market square, and the Gauja national park begins immediately outside it.
