Short description of Kaesong

Kaesong (개성) was the capital of the Koryo dynasty and is the only North Korean city whose old quarter survived the war largely intact. Its Koryo monuments are listed by UNESCO and include the Songgyungwan academy, now a museum of celadon and Buddhist sculpture, the tomb of King Kongmin and the Sonjuk Bridge where a loyal minister was killed. Traditional tile roofed houses line the lanes along a stream, and one courtyard compound takes guests. Kaesong ginseng is the local speciality, served with a pansangi meal of many brass bowls. The city is the base for visits to Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone.
