Short description of Jericho
Jericho (Ariha) is an oasis town in the Jordan Valley, some 250 metres below sea level, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. The mound of Tell es-Sultan holds the remains of a stone tower and walls from the early farming villages of the Neolithic, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A cable car climbs to the Monastery of the Temptation, clinging to the cliff where Jesus is said to have fasted. Hisham's Palace, an Umayyad winter residence, keeps a famous mosaic of a lion hunting beneath a tree. Palm groves and fruit stalls surround the town, and the Allenby crossing to Jordan lies close by.
