Short description of Gaza
Gaza (Ghazza) is one of the oldest cities of the eastern Mediterranean, a port on the ancient coastal road between Egypt and the Levant, and the main city of the Gaza Strip. Its old quarter held the Great Omari Mosque on the site of a Crusader church, the Mamluk palace of Qasr al-Basha and the Church of St Porphyrius, among the oldest churches still in use. A long sandy shore and a fishing harbour lined the city on the sea. Since the war that began in October 2023 much of the city lies in ruins, many of these sites are reported destroyed or badly damaged, and there is no access for travellers.
