Description
Ingapirca is Ecuador's largest and best-preserved Inca archaeological site and the country's most important pre-Columbian monument. Situated at an altitude of around 3,160 metres (10,370 ft), the complex was built on an earlier Cañari ceremonial centre and showcases a remarkable blend of Cañari and Inca architecture. Its most distinctive landmark is the elliptical Temple of the Sun, renowned for its precisely fitted, mortarless stone masonry, a hallmark of Inca engineering. Ceremonial plazas, astronomically aligned stone features and a small on-site archaeological museum offer insights into the site's religious and cultural significance. Located about two hours north of Cuenca, Ingapirca forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Qhapaq Ñan, the Andean road system, and is one of Ecuador's most fascinating historical attractions.
