Description
Huaraz is Peru's premier trekking and mountaineering destination and is widely regarded as the gateway to the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range in the world. Situated at an altitude of around 3,050 metres (10,000 ft) in the Peruvian Andes, the city is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, deep valleys and turquoise glacial lakes, making it the ideal base for exploring Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the region's most famous attractions are Laguna 69 and the Santa Cruz Trek, one of South America's most spectacular multi-day hikes. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chavín de Huántar, one of Peru's most important pre-Columbian ceremonial centres, is also within easy reach. Huaraz combines breathtaking alpine scenery, world-class outdoor adventures and authentic Andean culture, making it one of South America's top destinations for hikers, climbers and nature lovers.
