Höga Kusten, the “High Coast”, is a spectacular coastal landscape in Swedish Ångermanland, renowned for its exceptional post-glacial land uplift. The region is still rising by around 8 millimeters per year and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Rugged islands, forested hills, red granite cliffs, and historic fishing villages shape the landscape. Highlights include the Höga Kusten Bridge, Skuleberget, and Skuleskogen National Park with its dramatic Slåttdalsskrevan gorge. Hiking trails such as the High Coast Trail explore the varied scenery. Places like Ulvön and Norrfällsviken preserve the region’s fishing heritage, including the traditional production of surströmming, the famously pungent fermented herring.
