Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Botswana · Ghanzi · 1100 m

Description

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is one of the world’s largest protected areas, covering around 52,800 square kilometres in the heart of Botswana. Its vast landscape of dry grassland, scrub and fossil river valleys is renowned for its distinctive black-maned Kalahari lions, large herds of springbok and oryx, and diverse predator population. The Deception Valley is particularly celebrated as one of the reserve’s prime wildlife-viewing areas. The reserve is also closely connected to the history and culture of the San, whose traditional knowledge reflects thousands of years of adaptation to the Kalahari environment. Far from major settlements, the CKGR also offers exceptionally dark skies and spectacular views of the southern stars.
