Description
Cajamarca is a historic city in the northern highlands of Peru and ranks among the country's most significant historical destinations. It is best known as the site where the Inca ruler Atahualpa was captured in 1532, a turning point in the history of the Inca Empire, and for the preserved “Cuarto del Rescate” (Ransom Room). With its colonial old town, Baroque churches built from pale volcanic stone, and elegant Plaza de Armas, Cajamarca offers an authentic glimpse into the Peruvian Andes. The surrounding countryside is known for the historic thermal springs of Baños del Inca, fertile valleys, and important archaeological sites.
