Short description of Bouar
Around Bouar stand some seventy clusters of megalithic stones that the Gbaya call tazunu, raised in the first millennium before our era and scattered across a belt of country well over a hundred kilometres long. They are the strongest cultural heritage case this country has and sit on the tentative world heritage list. The town itself grew as a French garrison on the highway toward Cameroon and later housed peacekeepers. Armed groups contest exactly the countryside the stones stand in, and the highway through it has a record of ambushes, so no operator sells this.
