Description
Bayamo is one of Cuba’s oldest cities and is considered a cradle of the Cuban nation and independence movement. The historic colonial city is known as the birthplace of Cuba’s national anthem and for the determination of its inhabitants, who set Bayamo ablaze in 1869 rather than surrender it to Spanish colonial forces. Historic squares, colorful façades, and traditional horse-drawn carriages continue to shape the city’s distinctive character. Set at the edge of the Sierra Maestra, Cuba’s highest mountain range and once a stronghold of Fidel Castro’s revolutionaries, Bayamo blends colonial heritage, revolutionary history, and authentic Cuban culture and everyday life.
