Description
The Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos), with Playa Girón and Playa Larga on Cuba’s southern coast, combines a turbulent history with remarkably diverse natural landscapes. The region is known for the failed 1961 invasion, its clear Caribbean waters, colorful coral reefs, and natural sinkholes such as Cueva de los Peces. Excellent snorkeling and diving conditions make the coastline a popular destination for underwater enthusiasts. Surrounding the bay is the Ciénaga de Zapata, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of mangroves, wetlands, and forests inhabited by crocodiles, flamingos, and rare bird species such as the tiny bee hummingbird. The Bay of Pigs thus brings together a significant site in modern Cuban history with one of the country’s richest natural environments.
