Short description of Avatele
Avatele is the village on Niue's south-western corner and holds the closest thing the island has to a proper beach, a sandy bay with canoes drawn up on it and easy water for swimming and snorkelling. The Washaway Cafe stands at one end, an honesty bar that opens on Sundays and on no other day. The reef here shelves gently, unlike most of Niue's coast, which drops away within metres of the shore. Tracks run from the village to the cliffs on either side. Avatele is the usual place to end a day, with the sun going down over the water.
