Short description of Alofi

Alofi is the capital of Niue and the only town on an island that is one raised coral atoll, a ring of limestone standing above the sea with no rivers and almost no soil. The water offshore is among the clearest anywhere, visible to great depth, which is why divers and whale swimmers come. Avaiki Cave, where the first canoe is said to have landed, opens onto the reef below the town. Tracks lead down from the road to pools and caves in the cliff. The island has few beaches, and the coast is reached by sea tracks instead.
