Travel to Heard Island and the McDonald Islands
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are an uninhabited Australian territory in the Southern Ocean, about four thousand kilometres southwest of Perth. Heard Island is crowned by Big Ben, whose summit Mawson Peak is an active volcano and the highest mountain on Australian territory outside Antarctica.
Glaciers reach black beaches crowded with king and macaroni penguins and seals, and the islands are listed by UNESCO. Landing needs a permit, the voyage takes about ten days each way, and tourist ships call only rarely.
