Description
The Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) are a volcanic archipelago off Iceland’s southern coast and a fascinating blend of rugged nature, geology, and island history. Heimaey, the largest and only permanently inhabited island, is known for its dramatic cliffs, rich seabird colonies, and the striking Eldfell volcano. The 1973 eruption left a lasting mark on the island. More than 400 houses were destroyed by lava, while extensive cooling efforts using seawater helped protect the harbor. Nearby Surtsey, formed by an underwater volcanic eruption in 1963, offers a remarkable glimpse into the ongoing geological forces that shape the archipelago.
