Description
Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s most famous glacial lagoon, where ice, water and black volcanic landscapes come together in a spectacular setting. The lagoon lies at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, where enormous icebergs break away and drift through the lagoon toward the sea. At nearby Fellsfjara, known to travelers as Diamond Beach, pieces of ice washed ashore sparkle against the dark sand like scattered diamonds. The nearby town of Höfn is an important base for exploring Vatnajökull National Park, dominated by Europe’s largest ice cap by volume. Glaciers, volcanoes, lagoons and fascinating ice caves make the region one of Iceland’s most spectacular natural landscapes.
