Description
Tiberias (טְבֶרְיָה) sits two hundred metres below sea level on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, which is a freshwater lake and Israel's largest, and it is the base for the Christian sites strung around the northern end. Capernaum, where Jesus is described as having based his ministry, the Mount of Beatitudes and the church at Tabgha are within twenty minutes of each other. The town itself is Jewish and one of the four holy cities, with the tombs of Maimonides and Rabbi Akiva, and it has been a hot spring spa since Roman times.
